Gurunsi_bandGurunsi anklet

Country: Burkina Faso

Material: brass?

Length: 24 cm

Height: 8 cm

Anklet by the Gurunsi. Probably exclusively worn by female dancers. They usually wore the anklets in combination with cloths wrapped around the ankles. These types of anklets may also be prestigious jewellery worn by important women.

Many people have occupied themselves with the oval feet ring, from peoples in Ivory Coast, Burkina Faso and Mali, without actually acquiring knowledge about them.

Elze Bruyninx (The African Oval Brass Ring: A First Introduction in: Miscellanea, Ghent University, 1989) suspects (early 18th-century) Indian influences.
